The Role

Position Status: Full Time, 1 Year Contract with Possibility of Becoming Permanent

The Opportunity

Rupertsland Institute is recruiting for a Métis Employment Training and Information Services (METI-S) Advisor to support Métis clients in achieving long-term, sustainable employment. Reporting to the Assistant Manager, South, the successful candidate will conduct employment assessments and case manage employment interventions for Métis individuals, including supporting clients through job searches, career decision-making, skill enhancement, and overcoming potential barriers to employment. The METI-S Advisor will also advise clients on eligibility for Métis-specific programs and other relevant services, and liaise with clients, employers, and other community organizations to promote RLI programs and services. The successful candidate will have experience working with clients in an employment counselling capacity, possess strong communication skills, strong cultural awareness, and a passion for empowering individuals to overcome potential barriers.

To Fit the Role

Responsibilities:

  • Establish rapport with clients to determine strengths, needs, career goals, and potential barriers.
  • Describe the eligibility criteria for options suitable for the client’s employment goal and assess the client’s eligibility. Outline applicable funding options and assist the client with funding applications.
  • Review labour market information and assist clients to conduct research that identifies and clarifies suitable career goals.
  • Research occupations and requirements and assist clients in making informed choices with employment/education plans.
  • Work with clients to develop individualized action plans for employment.
  • Provide regular and consistent support to clients, including liaising with institutions and social workers, and promptly assisting clients to resolve any issues that arise.
  • Enter all data in the Client Database, including employability assessments, identified needs in job search, skill enhancement, career decision making, the client’s short and long-term career goals, barriers, and steps in the action plan.
  • Document all client information, employment outcomes, employment interventions, and comments into the data system.
  • Ensure hard copies of all files contain accurate and up to date information.
  • Conduct case management and support clients as they complete employment interventions.
  • Coach clients on job search and interview skills.
  • Provide assistance in finding employment to clients who have completed an intervention.
  • Query data and prepare reports and statistics as required, including advising the Manager of trends, client needs, and potential training projects required in the region.
  • Actively market RLI projects and services, and present information to various stakeholders as required.
  • Liaise and deliver information to Métis organizations, community agencies, and employers regarding RLI programs and services.
  • Attend meetings in the Indigenous/Métis community, educational institution meetings, and career and information fairs.
  • Provide services through the Mobile METIS units to other communities in the region.
  • Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends for RLI events, meetings, career and information fairs, and other activities.
  • Willingness and ability to travel as required. This position will require up to 15% travel throughout the province of Alberta.
  • Other duties as required.

Education and Experience:

  • Certificate, Diploma or Degree in Career Development, Humanities, or Social Services.
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years working with clients in an employment counselling role.
  • Experience in a non-profit and Indigenous organization are assets.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of the challenges, barriers, and social and economic factors faced by Indigenous individuals, particularly Métis communities.
  • Knowledge of labour market trends, including supply and demand, and education programs, institutions, and occupational requirements.
  • Knowledge of FOIP, PIPA, and other applicable privacy legislation.
  • Strong cultural and political sensitivity and awareness, including an understanding of Métis history, culture, and people.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to provide a safe and comfortable atmosphere, assess non-verbal cues, and build rapport. Professionalism and a positive attitude.
  • Strong relationship building skills with the ability to build relationships with multiple stakeholders, including clients, community members, partners, etc.
  • Strong communication skills, with excellent listening, verbal, and written skills to effectively document and provide information to clients, staff, and external agencies.
  • Ability to apply effective counselling techniques and advocate on behalf of clients with external agencies.
  • Ability to work effectively with a range of personalities, barriers and needs.
  • Ability to work with and support clients who may have disabilities, language or cultural differences, or other special needs.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, with minimal supervision.
  • Strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills, with the ability to de-escalate situations.
  • Strong organization and time management skills, with the ability to multi-task and case manage a large case load effectively and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and be adaptable and flexible to changing priorities.
  • Strong sense of ethics and ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Experience working with data management systems, and the ability to learn new systems quickly.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Explorer).
